The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 1 was introduced in 1992 and used the 4G63T turbocharged inline-4 engine and 4WD from the Galant VR-4.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 6.5 Tommi Makinen edition named after Finnish rally driver Tommi Makinen that had won Mitsubishi 4 times WRC championship.

In 2001, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 7 was launched with a new effective limited-slip differential and active centre differential. At the same time, a front helical a limited-slip differential was added.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8 was introduced in year 2003 with Super Active Yaw Control to handle traction and a 6-speed manual gearbox is included.

The new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X was introduced in 2007 with 2.0 liter all-aluminium inline-4 4B11T engine features with 6-speed Twin Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST) technology.
